“Snow Lotus”, botanical; Saussurea involucrata Karel. et Kir. (Asteraceae) is a valuable medicinal plant in china, which is used to treat arthritis, high-altitude diseases and gynecological diseases.
This is most likely owing to the many bioactive compounds it contains. The major compounds are syringin, rutin and hispidulin, which are all derived from the phenylpropanoid pathway (Li et al. 1980). In turn, these compounds are responsible for the biosynthesis of many secondary metabolites, such as flavonoids and the precursors for lignin (Boudet 2000; Lewis and Yamamoto 1990). Several studies have shown that syringin and its alcohol derivative, sinapyl alcohol, is able to inhibit - Tumor Necrosis Factor secretion, and have anti-hypersensitivity and anti-inflammatory effects on autoimmune diseases, such as uveitis (Jagetia et al. 1998). Rutin and hispidulin have antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, anticarcinogenic, cytoprotective and vasoprotective activities (Alcerito et al. 2002;Bourichea et al. 2005; Liu et al. 1985).
